Failed within 1 hour of installing4/6/2022 8:28:58 PM

Pros: – Quiet drive, while it lasted
– Fast, while it lasted
– Cheap, but now dead so going to cost to replace

Cons: – Lasted 1 hour

Overall Review: I bought this HDD for my NAS server. Typically I have always used enterprise level drives such as Ultrastar 7k4000 but I saw this Toshiba N300 on sale and well, you get what you pay for.

I installed this drive in my server, booted it up, and after resilvering the RAID setup it worked great for about an hour. Now i get SMART fail tests every 30 minutes (see below) :
Apr 6 20:36:24 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
Apr 6 20:36:24 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate.
Apr 6 21:06:23 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
Apr 6 21:06:23 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate.

I don’t know how I can get a replacement from Toshiba, but I read somewhere that this specific batch (July 2021) had a faulty motherboard so my guess is they dumped it on 3rd parties like Newegg to unload it for a cheap price. Thanks Toshiba!

Ordered 2, 1 Dead on Arrival12/18/2021 9:39:21 AM

Overall Review: I ordered two, one of them worked, the other was dead on arrival. I was wanting to use them in a raid setup, so I will have to wait until I get the drive back from Toshiba RMA. I suspect the drives were not packaged correctly. The box was way too big for the two hard drives and only a small packing pillow was present, but not enough to prevent it from moving.

Good drive at a good price1/8/2022 10:31:22 AM

Pros: Ordered two. Ran secure erase on both with no errors (yes, 8TB takes overnight… but I like to stress new drives a bit to trust them). Spacious and fast in a USB gen 2 enclosure. Very quiet and runs cool.

Cons: Should wait another three years to see the long haul performance but I am also currently running Toshiba HDDs that are now 8-10 years in service with no errors so… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Overall Review: Recommend these drives for fast economical data storage.
